Buru, Maluku Province

Buru is a regency in Maluku Province that became the initial implementation of all MDPI’s works, including data collection, community organization, and certification programs. Our working area spans 10 villages, 9 landing sites, and 14 fisher associations, directly supporting 250+ fishers. Since the beginning of fishery management activities in 2013, we have successfully catalyzed 139 Buru fishers, 6 suppliers, 3 processors, and more than 100 community members alike. Buru is the first MDPI working site that got the US Fair Trade certification and Marine Steward Council (MSC) certification in May 2020. The whole suite of MDPI’s fisheries and programmatic interventions are conducted in Buru, where MDPI has gained a local reputation as a trusted partner.

The Main Activities

1. Fisheries Improvement

  • Port-side data collection at 9 landing sites
  • Small-vessel technology implementation, including On-board observers, Time-lapse camera (TLC), Pelagic Data System (PDS), Reolink and Trekfish

 

2. Community Organization

  • Helped the community to start the Koperasi Nelayan Bupolo Bersatu cooperative
  • Empower coastal communities through champions formation
  • In 2020, assisted 65 fishers to register for their Kusuka card and 54 fishers to register for Jasindo insurance

 

3. Certifications

  • Has been implementing the FTUSA standard since 2014 with the fishers, 8 suppliers, and 2 processors.
  • In 2020, the North Buru FT Committee received Rp 258,129,704 in premium payments.
  • Helped Buru FTUSA fisher got MSC certification in May 2020
