Seram, Maluku Province

Located in the southern area, Seram is the second biggest island in Maluku province, also become a vibrant site of all MDPI’s intervention. Seram Island comprises 3 regencies with 4 big ports and some small ports to support general activities. We started our work in 2015 during the beginning of the Fair Trade Standard implementation, spanning 6 villages and 10 landing sites. The result of our activities giving direct support to more than 200 fishers and14 fisher associations. Through various programmatic interventions, in 2021 MDPI is able to support the expansion of MSC into South Seram with 142 vessels’ catch now carrying both eco-labels.

The Main Activities

1. Fisheries Improvement

  • Port-side data collection at 10 landing sites
  • Small-vessel technology implementation, including Onboard observers, Time-lapse cameras (TLC), Pelagic Data Systems (PDS), Reolink, Spot Trace and Trekfish


2. Community Organization

  • Helped the community to start the Koperasi Nelayan Tuna Bersaudara cooperative
  • Empower coastal communities through champions formation
  • Assisted 44 fishers to register for their Kusuka Card and 107 fishers to register for Jasindo Insurance in 2020


3. Certifications

  • Has been implementing the FTUSA standard 2 suppliers and 1 processor for more than 6 years
  • In 2020, the South Seram FT Committee received Rp 92,633,147 premium payments
  • The South Seram FTUSA fishers got MSC certification in April 2021
